写実的な古典絵画で描かれるシーンは、一見現実を描いているように思えます。しかし、多くの場合、それは創作であり合成によって場面を成立させていることも多いのです。「絵画は巧みに創作された演劇映画のワンシーンであり、舞台セットのようなものである」そんな視点を踏まえて一枚の絵を眺めてみます。さらには絵を解体し、演劇的なニュアンスを感じる部分のみ残して他を極力削ぎ落としてみます。そのような方法で舞台の細部を慎重に観察してみると、そこに隠されていた虚偽的演出、エロティックな身振りや動的要素が端的に抽出されていきます。
会場では、描きかけの絵画のように静物画の一部のモチーフのみ残して撮影された静物写真シリーズ 《Before the Beginning》、絵画の中の極々最小限の場面を切り抜いた映像シリーズ《A Scene》などを展示。解体された部品のように、不完全でかつ妙な生々しさをもった絵画の一部たちが展開されます。

This exhibition centers around a number of “incomplete works,” capturing motifs that are still in the process of getting ready to be painted and, as paintings, pose in front of the camera, including items from the “Before the Beginning” series of new large-format photographs that look like unfinished paintings, and the new video series “Test Shots” that capture extremely minimal scenes within paintings.
